Interior Design Goddess
Goddess furniture changes can make you more powerful, interesting, skilled, and talented. Change it up! Furniture is about one of the funnest things to change. Have something from another time? Don’t pitch it, go green and redo it. Put your own stamp on it and make it over, if you don’t want to restore it.
Antiques that are in pretty good shape should be restored, because obviously they aren’t made anymore. At least not the same way, with the same skills, styles, etc. Research it and do it yourself if you have the nerve, or take it to a professional. Get to know some reputable antique dealers and/or restoration artists in your town. But you want to learn a few things on your own, so you have a better chance of telling if they are snowing you. Been there, done that. Gotten things that I had no knowledge of, and after I learned, it appeared neither did the seller. Become an interior design goddess!
Think about that. Have you ever watched ‘Pawn Stars’ on the History Channel? Do you know where Rick got all that knowledge from? Reading book, after book, after book! That’s what he says. Reading is all important, and you never know when something will come in handy.
Just a little old
But what if it is just vintage? Fix it up to your own taste. Interior design goddess it! Change the color of it. Add some embellishments. Change the hardware if it doesn’t suit your style. Turn it into something totally different. A lot of people like taking old stuff and make it new again. It keeps the landfills a little emptier, and lessens the footprint for future generations.
What if the thing is just broke? Analyze it and see if it can be repaired. Home Depot is a great resource. They have helped me with a lot of what I have done over the last few years. You might need to pick up a few tools, or borrow some from a neighbor. I can tell you this. A lot of men think a woman who can handle power tools is very sexy.
One of the funner things to do, especially if you can spin a yarn, is to create a back story for your pieces. Who knows, someone just might fall for it. And it makes for a great conversation starter as well.
That is what I do, and I am here to show you how.
The Resources (there are more in the Resource Goddess)
There are good resources on the internet to start your knowledge.
- How to be a Furniture Detective – www.furnituredetective.com is done by Fred Taylor. He has a few key research items you can buy to start learning how to analyze furniture before you buy, and what you might want to do for restoring or repairing. Good stuff to learn as you go!
- Identify Antique Furniture App – www.connectedlines.com. An application and a website that discusses various periods of furniture, that covers the components from lines to foot style to wood and finishes for that period. Fascinating!
- Find out about antiques – www.antiquetrader.com is a good website that has lots of resources for you to look through and decide what is right for you, depending on what you want to collect.
I will add more information as I come across it.
